An Alaska Airlines plane and a SkyWest Airlines flight came a bit too close to each other. The situation unfolded last Monday at about 4:15 p.m. local time when an Alaska Airlines flight from California abandoned its landing attempt at the Portland airport due to bad weather — just as a SkyWest Airlines flight departed from the same airport. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the pilot of Alaska Airlines Flight 1299 initiated a standard maneuver known as a "go-around" due to wind while attempting to land at the airport and turned toward SkyWest Airlines Flight 3978, which had just taken off. "An air traffic controller instructed the Alaska Airlines pilot to turn away from the SkyWest aircraft," the FAA told Insider in a statement. SkyWest Airlines told Insider that the flight "departed normally with pilots following air traffic control instructions and landed routinely at Seattle."

United Airlines was struggling on Friday to recover from a week of flight delays and cancellations, testing the resilience of its operation as people head to airports ahead of the busy July 4 holiday. Other airlines suffered flight delays and cancellations at the time, too, but by Wednesday United’s problems stood out as they spread to its operations across the country. Still, the number of flights canceled by United on Thursday, more than 520, eclipsed cancellations by other carriers. SkyWest Airlines, which operates flights for United and several other major airlines, ranked second, canceling just over 100 flights. As of midmorning on Friday, United had canceled more than 200 flights, or 7 percent of its schedule for the day, according to FlightAware.

A SkyWest flight from Houston to LA was delayed after two flight attendants deplaned, per The Hill. A passenger on the flight said the crew members had an argument, causing one to burst into tears. The passenger was ESPN anchor Ashley Brewer, who said the male flight attendant approved the seat change, while the female flight attendant said it wasn't allowed under the airline's policy, per The Hill. The male flight attendant started to yell and the female flight attendant burst into tears and ran to the front of the plane, Brewer said, per The Hill. SkyWest did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but in a statement provided to Nexstar Media Group, which publishes The Hill, it said that it was aware of reports regarding a "flight attendant issue."
